Advanced Power Management (APM)

If you have an older computer that does not support ACPI, you can still take advantage of power management through the older Advanced Power Management (APM) 1.2.  To enable it:

1. Navigate to Start Menu > Settings > Power Options > APM
2. Select Enable APM Support
3. After this has been enabled, Windows can place the computer in standby mode and shut it down.

Hibernate Option

The Hibernate option is also available and can be enabled through the same applet as APM.

Hibernate mode is similar to IBM's Rapid Resume, in which Windows saves the contents of your memory onto your hard disk.  When it is engaged, the contents of the RAM are copied and the system is turned off (completely).  When you turn it back on, a progress bar appears on your screen and copies the RAM contents back.  All open applications and files instantly reappear as if nothing happened in the interim. 

For security, the system requests a password on reactivation.  The only catch is that you must have enough free disk space available to accommodate the RAM (i.e. if you have 64 MB RAM, you need 64MB HD space; if you have 128M, you need 128M HD space).
